The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care is holding a Preliminary hearing on 25 June at the Environment Court in Auckland. It will be live-streamed, with NZ Sign Language and captions, on this website between 10.00am-12.00pm on 25 June.

The purpose of this Preliminary hearing (a requirement of any Inquiry) is to share information about the Inquiry’s scope and focus and the methods we will use to deliver our work programme. There will be no evidence heard at this Preliminary hearing.

Only Commissioners and the Counsel Assisting the Inquiry will speak at the Preliminary hearing.

This Preliminary hearing is open to the public. As it is an information-based hearing and there is limited seating at the venue, people are encouraged to watch it via the live-stream on the Commission's website.

The Royal Commission will also hold a Procedural hearing in July/August to provide procedures for how people can participate in the Inquiry.  Detailed information about this and public hearings will be available soon.

Public hearings, set to start in October/November will see people give evidence and make submissions. Public hearings will involve survivors and their networks, institutions, lawyers, academics and will also be live-streamed on the Royal Commission website.
