Pānui - March 2024

Release date: 26 March 2024

The Inquiry is in the final steps of completing its final report.

Last week, the Court of Appeal heard a challenge to an earlier High Court ruling dismissing a claim for Judicial Review made by the Jehovah’s Witnesses.  We expect this matter to be completed within the next few weeks.

The Government has granted an additional short extension for delivery and asked the Royal Commission to deliver the final report to the Governor-General no later than 26 June.

We are confident all natural justice processes will be completed and we are hopeful we will have the outcome of the appeal.

This will ensure a proper, full, fair process with findings that are legally sound.

Survivors have waited a long time for this final report and we acknowledge that this news will be difficult for some.   We remain committed to delivering the final report as soon as possible.

Sadly, many have passed before they have received puretumu torowhānui – an apology, compensation or any acknowledgement of what happened to them. We encourage the Government and faith-based institutions to continue progressing the recommendations made in our final report He Purapura Ora, he Māra Tipu - From Redress to Puretumu Torowhānui.

Please get in touch with our Contact and Support Centre on 0800 222 727 or email contact@abuseincare.org.nz if you would like to discuss any questions or wellbeing support options.
