State Children’s Residential Care Hearing 3 to 11 May 2021

The Inquiry examined abuse and neglect of children and young people in residences run by the State, and by the independent sector on behalf of the State, such as boys’ and girls’ social welfare homes and family homes, and institutions that provided combined care and protection and youth justice care.

Survivors of abuse from the following residences gave evidence: 

  • Bollard Girls’ Home in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland 
  • Epuni Boys’ Home in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt 
  • Hokio Beach School near Taitoko Levin 
  • Kingslea Girls’ Homes / Burwood Training Centre in Ōtautahi Christchurch 
  • Kohitere Boys’ Training Centre in Taitoko Levin 
  • Moerangi Treks in Urewera 
  • Ōwairaka Boys’ Home in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland 
  • Whakapakari Youth Trust on Aotea Great Barrier Island 
  • Family Homes throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
