High Court’s decision against former Lake Alice psychiatric hospital nurse

Release date: 21 June 2023

The Royal Commission is aware of High Court’s decision to grant permanent stay of proceedings against former Lake Alice psychiatric hospital nurse John (Dempsey) Corkran.

We are in the process of providing an update of our redacted copy of Beautiful Children. This includes a Ministerial process before we can publish the full version on our website.

Beautiful Children confirms what survivors have been saying all along – they were abused and tortured at Lake Alice.

The Lake Alice child and adolescent unit is a shameful chapter in the history of Aotearoa New Zealand.  Our investigation into the Lake Alice Child and Adolescent Unit will directly inform the findings and recommendations of our final report.
